Supporting mental health in the workplace can benefit every employee and organisation, but is it even more crucial when it comes to young employees?
The latest research suggests it is.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics notes a marked increase in mental health issues amongst those aged 16-24 over the last decade, with 40% of the age group having experienced a mental disorder.
Poor mental health is often linked to a loss in productivity and staff turnover, resulting in increased costs to the employer.
And even though young employees are more likely to be experiencing issues surrounding mental health, they are less likely to disclose to employers for fear of the impact it could have on their future careers.
So how can employers and organisations better support the younger members of their workforce?
Here’s a quick check:
- What structures and resources are available to managers to help them support employees and understand how to address mental health issues?
- Do employees have access to wellbeing services, and if so, are employees aware of the services?
- Are there regular check-ins with employees, where they are welcome to disclose any difficulties they’re currently experiencing?
- Is there a culture of support around mental wellbeing?
