Workplace Wellness Program

Here’s how you can help.

Creating a mentally healthy workplace is a collective effort that takes place on all levels of an organisation.

But even the individual contributions of employees and managers can have a massive impact on those around them.

If you’ve observed changes in a coworker’s behaviour that suggest they might be grappling with mental health challenges, letting them know that you’re a safe and supportive person to talk to can make all the difference.

How can you initiate a conversation like this in a work setting?

Talking about mental health doesn’t have to be daunting.

We’ve gathered insights from Beyond Blue, a trusted mental health resource, to guide you in approaching sensitive conversations.

Here’s a step-by-step approach to use when addressing a coworker you’re concerned about:

    1. Find the right moment

Pick a quiet and comfortable space where both of you can talk openly without distractions.

    1. Ask if they’re okay.

Explain why you’re concerned and let them know you’re there to listen without judgement.

“You haven’t seemed yourself lately – is there something on your mind?”

“I’ve noticed that you’ve been a bit quiet lately. Is there anything you’d like to talk about?”

It’s okay if they’re not ready to talk at that moment. Just let them know that you’ll always be available for a conversation if they’d like to have one.

    1. Be a good listener.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is lend a listening ear. Let them share at their own pace. You’re there to support, not to solve.

    1. Be supportive.

Unless there’s a concern that someone is in immediate danger, keep what they’ve told you confidential, and ask if there’s a way that you can support them going forward.

    1. Offer hope.

Remind them that help is available and encourage them to access any resources provided by your organisation, like an EAP. They don’t have to face these challenges alone.

You can be a catalyst for change by cultivating an atmosphere where it’s safe to seek support for mental health issues.

By showing empathy and understanding, you can help break down the barriers around mental health.
