As we approach World Mental Health Day on October 10th, we’re reminded of the importance of prioritising well-being and the role a workplace can play in the mental health of its employees.
Let’s take a look at some eye-opening statistics: In the last year alone, one in five Australians aged 16 to 85 experienced a mental health condition, and a staggering 44% have encountered a mental health condition at some point in their lives.
Anxiety disorders top the list as the most prevalent mental health condition, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Now, take a moment to look around your workplace. It’s a sobering thought that one in five of your colleagues—20% of your team—could be grappling with poor mental health.
Given that a significant portion of our lives (around 30%) is spent at work, it comes as no surprise that our workplaces can have a massive impact on our mental health, whether that’s for better or worse.
That’s why it’s imperative for organisations to cultivate a workplace culture that strongly encourages open discussions about mental health and prioritises the well-being of its employees.
Here are a few practical steps that organisations and companies can take to ensure they’re doing all they can to foster a mentally healthy workplace.
- Employee Assistance Programs: Provide access to free counselling and mental health resources.
- Mental Health Awareness Training: Ensure your management team undergoes mental health awareness training and adopts an approachable leadership style.
- Performance Feedback: Provide consistent feedback to give clarity and empower your team.
- Flexible Working Arrangements: Consider flexible work options, such as remote work or flexible hours, to accommodate those with mental health conditions.
- Well-being Workshops: Offer workshops on topics like sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness to promote overall well-being and normalise mental health discussions.
- Buddy/Mentor Programs: Foster a supportive environment with mentorship programs that give employees a safe opportunity to discuss mental health with someone they trust.
- Social Connection: Encourage checking in with remote team members and provide opportunities for social connection, even in virtual spaces.
As we approach World Mental Health Day, let’s do all we can to prioritise mental well-being in our workplace. Together, we can create a supportive environment where every team member thrives.
