According to the 2019 National Health Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, around 1 in 4 employed Australians reported having a mental or behavioural condition in the previous 12 months.
Of those, around 45% reported that their condition had an impact on their work or study.
It’s more important than ever that employers familiarise themselves with both how to identify mental health struggles and how to respond.
Here are ten noticeable indications of mental health difficulties (outlined by Champion Health) to be watchful for, whether in yourself or others in your workplace.
If you notice any of the following common signs, it could be time for a conversation.
- Uncharacteristic behaviour, such as irritability, aggressiveness, or being unusually quiet
- Low levels of engagement, a lack of motivation, or difficulty concentrating
- Decreases in productivity, appearing lethargic, distracted, or disinterested
- Changes in sleeping or eating behaviours
- Disinterest in work or day-to-day activities, especially if this is a change from the norm
- Increased absences
- Changes in working patterns, like coming in late, leaving early, or frequent absence from work
- Withdrawal from social situations
- Irrational fears, paranoia or anxiety
- Substance use/misuse, whether it’s alcohol, drugs, or other addictions
One or more of these signs in someone’s behaviour might not always be indicative of a mental health issue, but it is important to identify those who might be struggling.
By initiating discussion and fostering an open and supportive environment, employers can help to dispel the stigma around mental health, giving employees the chance to get the help they need.
